certainly mitt romney is far to the right on things like women's issues, on choice, on judge, on all those things, but i think the conversation has been more about is he for the top over the folks who are in the middle and at the bottom. if you look at what he did at the debate, he tried to, you know, wiggle his way out of being this guy who is just for the top, this plutocrat that american people think he is basically and that he is, and the truth of the matter is that his position, the things that he has espoused on the campaign trail that he used to get through the republican primary, are positions that are very focused on the top and it looks like what the campaign is doing and what the press is doing is pointing out mitt romney is not telling the truth about the positions he has. >> yeah. but that's presuming he's going to stay on one message or the other. the most shocking thing about the debate, you're not going to do the 20% across the board tax cut, now you like certain parts of the obama care, but it muddles the president's tactics in terms on hammering him on things if tho

this is a fundamental disagreement about the way the world works and i think that romney was right this morning when he went in, he said look, there are two different viewpoints here. >> jennifer, you have to hold back. i can see you racing to get in there. it's not like last night. you can just pile in. >> truly, the $716 billion as you know was the same $716 billion in savings that paul ryan put into his budget, and which all of those republicans voted for. why? because it's about smart way of managing medicare. it is not taking away a single benefit. it is not cutting off a single beneficiary. it's asking the providers to manage their care better. and that was a smart thing to do. that's why paul ryan supported it, and every fact checker, not just cnn, but every fact checker that has looked at this has said it is a lie, a pants-on-fire lie. >> newt gingrich, a pants-on-fire lie. >> this is baloney. what they're saying is you can take $716 billion out of a program magically but you won't have taken $716 billion out of the program. now, that is simply a denial of how the real world wor

last night's opening statements set the tone for the debate and mitt romney came right out of the gate with, get this, a joke. let's watch. >> 20 years ago i became the luckiest man on earth because michelle obama agreed to marry me, and so i just want to wish, sweetie, you happy anniversary and let you know that a year from now we will not be celebrating it in front of 40 million people. >> congratulations to you, mr. president, on your anniversary. i'm sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine here with me. congratulations. >> that was, i hate to say it, charming. >> yeah. >> james. >> yeah. >> where did that come from? >> it came from mitt romney. he's rather notorious for telling jokes that go over like lead balloons. this did not. he finally found his groove as far as a comedian is concerned. at least for that moment. >> let's talk about the president. he was the one i think that was the base of most consternation. you know, he was looking down a lot. did he know and what did you think about the fact of that split screen? there we are watching it now. we never didn't

they've been following what mitt romney has said. >> right. >> they're tuning in to the fact that he wasn't telling the truth last night. >> the conversation we had just a moment ago says on some of these things there are different ways of looking at t the point is, who is going to make the best point to the american people? some things can be proven definitively right or wrong. andrew sullivan, an influential supporter of the president and blogger called his performance absolutely disgracefully bad. let me play a sound bite of what he said and let you respond to that. >> i have never seen a president of the united states blather, blather on like that, bore us, tell us none of his major arguments, fight back against any of the obvious distortions of the other candidate and just sit there. i mean, really. and you know how much i love this guy. >> stephanie, did you feel a little bit of that frustration? >> you know, i appreciate his opinion. i disagree with it. i think the president had a good performance last night. obviously, mitt romney had a good performance, but that's just what
